CHIRP: Pregnancy

Here’s an easy way to talk to kids about pregnancy.

pregnancy

A woman is pregnant when she has a baby, which is also called a fetus, growing in her uterus. This is a special place in her body made to grow babies.

Once a girl starts her period this is a sure sign she is making an egg each month. If she is making an egg, this means she is able to get pregnant if she has sex. Sex and babies are for later in life and should be planned for.

Women can decide when they want to become pregnant. Most of the time, when people have penis in vagina sex, they are doing it for fun and because it feels good, not because they want to have a baby. A woman can use birth control to prevent pregnancy. When you are older and ready for sex, I expect you (or your partner) to use birth control so you don’t become pregnant accidentally.

A woman’s body changes a lot during pregnancy. It’s totally amazing that the female body can grow and sustain a life. It usually takes 40 weeks for a baby to be totally ready to be born. That’s 10 months!
