Family Sexuality Education Month! Where’s the parade?!
You can imagine that I am delighted there is a month devoted to talking to kids about sex! Too bad no one but me and about 100 other people know this. I’ve been trying to make headway with my own kiddo on this front.
I know you all like to think I’ve got it down, which I do, in many, many ways. But I still find it challenging to talk to my boy – I get uncomfortable, worried and stumble over my words. I do take my own advice and keep it short and keep my eyes open for teachable moments.
Sadly, he can see me coming a mile away and gets this “Oh God. Her she goes again!” look in his eye. I hang in there though, and I think it’s worth it.
This week it was the eye opening realization that 12 year olds can get pregnant. Periods = ability to have a baby. Pre-teen pregnancy, anyone? Ick. He was shocked, but we talked about how it’s rare for 12 year olds to have sex, that it’s better to wait until college (or never) and this wasn’t something that was common
Now, if I can just get him to read a book about puberty so I don’t have to talk about pubic hair!
