Hello! I hope this finds you well in the midst of all of this social, emotional and physical upheaval.
The other night I was (and still am) trying to figure out what to say to you about the Black Lives Matter Revolution and how it relates to my work. My white friend said, “Amy, sexuality education IS social justice.”
Social justice is justice in terms of the distribution of wealth, opportunities, and privileges within a society. Social justice means things are fair, equal and balanced in our society.
Black people are and have been getting the shit end of the stick.
And when it comes to sexual health education Black kids suffer a lot because it is not fair, equal or balanced. This has huge negative impact on their lives – physically, emotionally, socially, economically and spiritually.
Some stats:
- Black adolescents and young adults age 13-24 account for over half of HIV diagnoses in their age group
- Black girls have two times the rate of pregnancy than white girls – 32/1000 vs 16/1000
- Black adolescents have sex at an earlier age than do other ethnicities
Black Women for Wellness has a comprehensive sexuality education program called Get Smart B4U Get Sexy specifically for African American youth and young adults. Learn more about the organization in this short video.
Get Smart B4U Get Sexy is a comprehensive program that provides prevention and intervention resources particularly for those who are African American and/or Black, female, in foster care systems and/or at high risk for sexually transmitted infections.
Kerry, Milo and I have donated $500 to this organization because we have the privilege to support Black girls and their futures.
Thru June 30, 2020 for every sale of my Birds & Bees Solution Center I will donate 50% to this organization.
It’s $69 and you pay once and get forever access so you can be a rock star sex talker – and help Black youth who don’t have the resources your kids do.
You can check it out here.
Additionally, I will continue to educate the folks I work with about the disparities for BIPOC in their sexual health and sexuality education. And I’ll be doing other stuff that I haven’t figured out yet.
Thanks for listening/reading/being kind/making the world a better place for children everywhere.
