A tampon is a plug made of cotton or other fibers that fits inside a vagina. It’s used to soak up the blood from a period. Some women and girls use them, some don’t. Most girls start with pads and move up to tampons.
One of the risks of using a tampon is something called Toxic Shock Syndrome. This can make you very ill, and even kill you. It’s important to use 100% organic cotton tampons and never leave a tampon in for more than 4 hours.
Using tampons is a choice you can make. There are a lot of other ways to manage your period like specially made-for-periods underpants and menstrual cups that can be re-used.
