How to Talk About: Erections

how to talk to kids about erections

I’ve provided one quick explanation of each of the private parts rather than a beginner, intermediate and advanced scripts. I figure you don’t need much more than this to answer basic questions or give basic explanations.

Sometimes a little extra blood will move into the penis and it will get hard. This is called an erection. It’s a totally normal thing. It’s the penis practicing for when the boy is older and is ready for sex. Erections can feel good or a little painful sometimes.

The penis is filled with a spongy material with a lot of cells that can fill up with blood. This is what makes it hard. It will eventually go back down to its regular size after an erection.

As boys get older and their body starts to change into a man’s body, they may notice they have erections more often. They can happen for no clear reason or when they see someone they find attractive. Again, totally normal.

This is also called having a “boner” or a “hard-on”.
