Just like we are emotional, spiritual, intellectual and social, we are also sexual. Just like all these other elements of being human, sexuality develops over time and all throughout our lives. Healthy childhood sexuality does not look like adult sexuality – it usually looks like play. We worry when children engage in behaviors that appear to be adult-like.
Your culture, upbringing and values all impact how you think and feel about children and sexuality. This doesn’t mean you have to be comfortable with it, just aware that it is often considered typical and healthy. If you find a child or children engaged in sexual behavior, remember to calmly address the situation, ask the children to put their clothes on (if need be) and re-direct their behavior.
