Tampon Insertion Fail – Pointers To Share With Your Daughter

First Time Tampon Insertion Tips

13-Year-Old Girl Needs Help With First Time Tampon Insertion

Hi there! My daughter is 13 and trying to insert a tampon. She says the hole is too small and is crying!

Any tips with 1st-time-users?

Thanks!

Let Her Finger Be Her Guide To Getting The Tampon In There

Howdy Mama of a Teen Girl!

Tampon insertion can be intimidating but let her know it isn’t as hard as she thinks.

I would suggest to her that she stick her finger into her vagina and see if it is easy for it to go in, or not.

Her hymen may be intact or just barely open. Her finger will let her know.

If that really hurts, then there may be something “up” down there – probably along the lines of what I said above. If she can’t find the opening to her vagina at all, then you may need to have her see her doctor. Sometimes, the hymen is completely closed.

She’s gonna have trouble with the tampon if she balks at the finger in her vag. This is the best way to figure out what’s up down there.

Make sure the tampons are tiny – they make them cigarette sized (but you probably know this.)

Give her a mirror and this will help her take aim.

You can also put a bit of lube on the tampon and slick it up a bit. This should help as well. But have her do the finger check first.

The book The Care and Keeping of You 2: The Body Book For Older Girls may have some ideas too. Or the Girls Body Book. Or Period: A Girls Guide.
